Description
What it is
SS-31, also coded elamipretide and MTP-131, is a cell-permeable tetrapeptide with the sequence D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2 and a free-base molecular weight of roughly 639.8 g/mol. Chemically it is not a conventional peptide: two of its four residues are non-standard, D-arginine (a D-amino acid) and Dmt (2′,6′-dimethyltyrosine, a non-natural methylated tyrosine), and it is C-terminally amidated. The alternating basic and aromatic motif gives it a net positive charge and mitochondrial permeability, letting it concentrate on the inner mitochondrial membrane. AxYn supplies it as 10 mg and 50 mg research vials, as free base or the hydrochloride salt.
Research context
SS-31 is studied at the mitochondrial-membrane level. Preclinical work describes reversible binding to cardiolipin on the inner mitochondrial membrane, with associated effects on cristae structure, respiratory supercomplex assembly and reactive oxygen species. It is used strictly as a reference peptide for in-vitro research by qualified professionals.
283 studies indexed on PubMed (NIH) for SS-31 as of August 2026. A measure of research volume only, not a claim of efficacy.
Handling and storage
Supplied lyophilised. For laboratory handling the powder is reconstituted with bacteriostatic water. Store the lyophilised vial cold and protected from light; reconstituted material is cold-chain dependent.
Testing and quality
Every batch is third-party tested. Because the molecule contains a D-amino acid and a methylated tyrosine, mass alone is not enough: the Certificate of Analysis should confirm the correct stereochemistry and the Dmt residue, the C-terminal amide, the salt form, HPLC purity with chromatogram and mass spectrometry. Supplied for laboratory research use only. Not for human or animal consumption.
