What it is

MOTS-c is a 16-residue mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP) with the sequence Met-Arg-Trp-Gln-Glu-Met-Gly-Tyr-Ile-Phe-Tyr-Pro-Arg-Lys-Leu-Arg (MRWQEMGYIFYPRKLR) and a free-base molecular weight of roughly 2174.6 g/mol. It is unusual in being encoded within the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene rather than the nuclear genome. The molecule is linear, has no cysteine and no disulfide bridge, and carries multiple basic residues that make it water-soluble and positively charged. It also carries two methionine residues, which are oxidation-prone. AxYn supplies it as a 10 mg research vial, commonly as the acetate salt.

Research context

MOTS-c is studied at the mitochondrial and metabolic-signalling level. Preclinical work describes regulation of metabolic homeostasis through the folate-AICAR-AMPK axis, activation of AMPK, nuclear translocation under metabolic stress, and PGC-1alpha-dependent effects on mitochondrial bioenergetics. It is used strictly as a reference peptide for in-vitro research by qualified professionals.

Research activity data from NIH

247 studies indexed on PubMed (NIH) for MOTS-c as of August 2026. A measure of research volume only, not a claim of efficacy.

Handling and storage

Supplied lyophilised. For laboratory handling the powder is reconstituted with bacteriostatic or sterile water. Store the lyophilised vial cold and protected from light. Because of the two methionine residues, methionine oxidation is the key stability point, so minimise air and light exposure; reconstituted material is cold-chain dependent.

Testing and quality

Every batch is third-party tested. The Certificate of Analysis should state the salt form, HPLC purity with chromatogram, and mass spectrometry confirming the expected mass and showing minimal oxidised (+16 Da) species. Supplied for laboratory research use only. Not for human or animal consumption.

Frequently asked questions

What is MOTS-c?
What it is
MOTS-c is a 16-residue mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP) with the sequence Met-Arg-Trp-Gln-Glu-Met-Gly-Tyr-Ile-Phe-Tyr-Pro-Arg-Lys-Leu-Arg (MRWQEMGYIFYPRKLR) and a free-base molecular weight of roughly 2174.. Supplied lyophilised for laboratory research only.
What does the research say about it?
247 studies indexed on PubMed (NIH). We link the live record so you can review it. No health claims are made.
Is MOTS-c legal to buy in the UK for research purposes?
Yes. Not a licensed medicine; supplied as a research chemical for laboratory research use only, to researchers aged 18+. Not for human or veterinary use.
How do I reconstitute it?
Reconstitute with bacteriostatic water; the volume added sets the concentration. See our reconstitution guide. No dosing guidance is provided.
What testing has been done on this product?
Third-party tested (Janoshik): HPLC purity with chromatogram and mass-spec identity, per-batch Certificate of Analysis, QR code on the vial linking to it.
How should I store it and what should it look like?
Store cold and dark (−20 C long term); keep any reconstituted solution refrigerated. A white to off-white lyophilised powder is normal, giving a clear colourless solution once reconstituted.
